Juneteenth ​Featured Performers & Partcipants

Join us in celebrating Juneteenth, a significant day of freedom and reflection! We invite families and friends to come together for an evening filled with enriching activities that honor our history and culture. Bring the children along to learn about Harriet Tubman, presented  by Dr. Daisy Century, historical interpreter, author, educator, and actress. Harriet Tubman was  a prominent abolitionist, best known for her role as a "conductor" on the Underground Railroad, leading enslaved people to freedom.  

You will also see the amazing performance of Mafalda Thomas-Bouzy, African dance stilt walker and drummer.  A former Coatesville resident, Mafalda uses music and movement to stimulate compassion and care. She says, “Drum and dance is fundamental in Africa. The movements and rhythms reveal cultural practices, such as hunting, fishing, washing clothes in the river, rites of passage, and harvesting. 

We've got an amazing lineup of other performers and participants to make the day unforgettable:
  • Brother Hakim Tendaji: Feel the rhythm with our talented congo drummer from the House of Umoja (Phila). 🥁
  • 40+ Double Dutch Jumpers: Watch in awe as they showcase their skills! (DE) 🏆
  • Lahtesha: Marvel at the creativity of our talented balloon artist. 🎈
  • DJ Wayne James: Groove to the beats that keep the party alive! 🎶
  • Kennett Heritage: Get hands-on with lantern-making activities. 🏮
  • Kennett YMCA: Keep the kids entertained with fun-packed activities! 🤸‍♂️
  • Voices Underground/Square Roots: Join in lively street games for all ages! 🎯
But that's not all! Over 25 vendors and exhibitors will be there, offering a variety of goods and experiences:
  • Delicious Eats: Indulge in soul food, sandwiches, and classic Southern desserts. 🍽️
  • Unique Beverages: Try our special Juneteenth beer. 🍻
  • Fashion Finds: Discover African fashions, handmade cultural clothing, and fashion accessories. 👗
  • Artisanal Crafts: Find macrame charms, hand-knit creations, and tie-dye shirts. 🧶
  • Self-Care Products: Explore natural self-care items and wickless soy candles. 🕯️
  • College Opportunities: Chat with college admissions staff and grab those applications! 🎓

In addition to the educational experience, we have a variety of fun activities planned! Watch as your children delight in the creativity of our balloon artist and enjoy colorful face painting that will spark their imaginations. They can also participate in lantern making, which allows them to express their artistic side. For those looking for a bit of physical activity, join in on the double-dutch jump rope sessions and feel the rhythm of our drumming circle.
